VR headsets have come a long way since the Oculus Rift. The latest devices like Meta Quest 2 and Quest 3 mean we’re no longer tethered to a PC, we can enjoy 6DOF VR experiences, and the screen resolution is like going from VHS to 4K TV. Both Quest 2 and Quest 3 are far superior in every way to any of Meta/Oculus’s predecessors.
I’ve seen a lot of talks on some of the popular VR porn subreddits about Quest headsets. Is it worth upgrading from Quest 2 to Quest 3 being the most popular debate. As somebody who’s fortunate enough to own both a Quest 2 and Quest 3 headset (and got many, many hours of enjoyment out of each), I’d like to think I can be of some assistance here. So in response, I have put together this guide that should hopefully steer anybody asking the same questions in the right direction. So without further a due, let’s jump right in!
As you can expect with Meta’s third-generation Quest headset, it is superior to its second in almost every way. First let’s talk about the most important aspect, the visuals.
Pixels – Quest 3 has more vibrant LCD displays and more pixels per eye than Quest 2 resulting in a sharper, more brighter image quality. With something as up close and intimate as VR porn, this can’t be overlooked as the visual quality is pretty much everything. The Quest 2 has 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye whereas the Quest 3 has 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye. This is an increase of 30% meaning you can enjoy VR porn with much greater clarity. This is particularly noticeable with intimate parts of the scene where you’re up close like missionary, eye contact, kissing, etc. The quality is considerably sharper making everything feel much more realistic and immersive.
Field of View – Quest 2 has a FOV of around 90 degrees whereas Quest 3 has a FOV of around 110 degrees. This is particularly useful for gaming experiences and group sex scenes as you can see more of your surroundings at once. On top of the larger field of view, the clarity reaches right to the edge meaning those parts that normally blur out on Quest 2 (like looking down during missionary) no longer blur out.
The Sweet Spot – The addition of pancake lenses is one of the biggest improvements where VR porn is concerned. Pancake lenses provide a clearer all-round image meaning you don’t have to focus on the “sweet spot” to get the best clarity. The sweet spot is the area in the middle of the lens in which your pupil needs to be to get a clear image. With the addition of pancake lenses, essentially the whole area is the sweet spot. This is particularly an improvement for threesome and gang bang scenes where there is a lot of action going on in your field of view. You can admire the whole image in almost perfect clarity without needing to shift your headset. It also reduces blurring if the headset shifts around on your face while moving.
Screendoor effect – You know that annoying thin dark line appearance you get with Quest 2, almost as if you’re looking through a mesh sheet? Well with Quest 3, that’s practically gone. The screendoor effect is caused by the gaps between pixels but as the Quest 3 has more pixels per eye, this dramatically reduces the effect to the point where its only noticable if you squint and try to find it. This provides a far more realistic VR porn experience as the mesh-like screen covering the scene is now eliminated.
The next most important feature is the ability to watch AR porn with Quest 3. Although Quest 2 does have passthrough mode, Quest 3 has full colour passthrough and higher resolution resulting in a far superior AR experience. My take on Quest 2’s passthrough is comparable to watching from a drunk color-blind man’s perspective. Quest 3 allows you to experience AR porn in full color and although the resolution isn’t perfect, it’s lightyears ahead of its predecessor.
Quest 3 is noticeably more comfortable and is about 40% slimmer than Quest 2. Again, not a factor you should overlook if you’re using your headset for VR porn. Vr porn movies typically run for about 40 minutes with some even lasting over 2 hours. Just the addition of the added comfort alone so you can sit back and enjoy the show is worth the upgrade in my opinion. Because if you’re like me, a total fucking VR porn addict, then you’re probably going to be strapping on your goggles at least a few times per week.
If you want my advice on whether you should upgrade from a Quest 2 to a Quest 3, then you can probably guess what my answer is going to be here. If you’re serious about getting the most out of VR porn then I highly recommend biting the bullet and getting yourself a Quest 3. Not only will you enjoy a greatly improved virtual reality experience, but you also get the added bonus of augmented reality porn thanks to the headset’s full-color passthrough. Obviously, this does come at a cost. $499.99 for the 128GB version, and $649.99 for the 512GB version. But in my opinion, it’s one of the best investments you could ever make!
